A ROAD SAFETY scheme for Kilmoganny, in rural Kilkenny, is to be considered following a serious accident after which a horse died and a man was injured.

At this month’s meeting of local councillors a pleas was made for measures to slow the busy road.

Cllr Joe Sheridan said the road from Carrick on Suir approaching Kilmoganny has a 50kph speed limit “but traffic tends to be very quick” on the road.

The councillor said he knew there were issues in all villages trying to slow traffic. This road is “incredibly busy” with people travelling that way to get on to the motorway.

There is a nursing home, a health centre and other community buildings along that road too, he added.

“It’s quite a dangerous junction,” Cllr Sheridan pointed out.

He appealed to the area engineer to look at carrying out some traffic calming work in the area as soon as possible.

Cllr Stephanie Doheny agreed with her colleague, saying she would like to see something done in that area.

Area Engineer, Declan Murphy, said there are “a few” potential projects on the list and Kilkenny County Council will be applying for funding under the Active Travel Scheme and the Low Cost Safety Scheme for various works.

Funding will dictate what work can be done, he said.
