The members of Kilkenny Taekwondo Club had a triumphant return to their club on Hebron Road on Wednesday evening, after a successful trip to Milan, Italy for the first Song Moo Kwan European Championships.

Parents and supporters turned out in force to welcome home the winning team: Luke O’Dwyer, Jack Dennehy (European Champion) and Konrad Palczynski (silver medal) all from St Kieran’s College;

Stephen Power (bronze medal) from CBS, and Caoilfhionn Burke (fifth place) from Pobal; Dawid Palczynski (European Champion), Rafal Palczynski (silver), Patryk Liszka (silver), Dylan Lynch (silver) and Valter Sousa (bronze ) — all from St John’s Senior School.

“This was our first SMK European Championships and we had a fantastic tournament,” Song Moo Kwan European President Grand Master Guy Jones.

“Almost 340 athletes from across Europe took part. We were also delighted to have the World Song Moo Kwan President, Senior Grand Master Hee Song Ro oversea the event.”

Principal of St John’s Senior School Brian Roche, where five of the boys are students, said great praise was due to Mr Jones and his wife Christine, for her efforts in getting so many children from the school involved.

“For one club from a country not renowned for its tradition of Taekwondo to have done so well is fantastic, but for five of the medalists to go to the same school is very unique,” he said.

“We’re extremely proud of their success, but also of the humble way in which they have celebrated.”
