Picture gallery: A splash of colour for Clogh as new playground opens

The North Kilkenny community of Clogh has seen a new splash of colour brought to the village following the opening of the new playground.

The amenity is a free, fun accessible play space for the children of Clogh, Moneenroe and surrounding areas. It provides a space accessible to all children regardless of ability — with play equipment suitable for children aged between 3-12 years including a wheelchair accessible carousel and sand and water play area.

Communal seating and picnic benches are set within the centre of the playground, offering an intergenerational social space.

The playground is the end result of the hard work and commitment of a group of local parents and members of the community.

The official opening was performed on Sunday by Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council Eamon Aylward, marking the end of an 18-month process for the community, during which as much as€96,0000 was secured in grants and fundraising.

However, the initial foundations were laid five years previously by Clogh Community Council, who applied for planning permission for the playground within the existing community field and walking track.

As a group, the community then organised themselves and merged collective skills, expertise in fundraising, grant applications and networking to realise the ambition.

Plaques lining the walls adjacent to the playground acknowledge the contributions of Kilkenny County Council, The National Lottery, KBC Bright Ideas and the local businesses, individuals and families who supportedthe project.

The playground itself is located within the community walking track, promoting whole family wellbeingand acting as a safe and social space where adults can exercise as their children have fun and play.
