A ceremony was held for Eamon Langton in the Set Theatre on Monday evening
A landmark moment in Kilkenny’s history unfolded on Monday evening as legendary local businessman Eamon Langton was bestowed with the Freedom of Kilkenny City.
The prestigious honour was presented to Mr Langton in recognition of his exceptional contribution to life in Kilkenny, particularly through his longstanding impact on the hospitality sector.
The Langton empire now includes the multi-award-winning Langton House Pub, Restaurant & Hotel, the charmingly traditional Bridies Bar, the culturally vibrant Set Theatre, and the elegant Marble City Bar and Tea Rooms.
Proposing the honour, Mayor of Kilkenny City, Cllr John Coonan described Mr Langton as a ‘champion of our city’ and an ‘unofficial ambassador’.
Taking over the family public house on John Street in 1975, Mr Langton made the business a household name with their popular restaurant, hotel, theatre and tea-rooms making the 'Langton' name and brand known far and wide today.
Monday’s event was attended by elected representatives, family, friends, and special guests from across the city and county.
The motion received unanimous support from city councillors.
“Cities are shaped not simply by their ancient buildings or their cobblestones, but by the people who devote their lives to them. Tonight, we honour one such person—one of Kilkenny City’s most prominent businessmen, and a man whose personal story and professional life are inextricably woven into the very fabric of this city,” Cllr Coonan told those gathered.
“Eamon is not just a publican; he is a champion of this city. What truly distinguishes Eamon is how his success has always been directed in the service of Kilkenny. He is deeply passionate about promoting our city across sport, business, tourism, entertainment, and hospitality,” he continued.
“Over the decades, Langtons has served as the backdrop for countless fateful conversations where Eamon has acted as an unofficial ambassador for our city.
“Through his expert guidance, deep connections to local business organisations, and undeniable passion, he has convinced visionary local entrepreneurs and global companies alike that Kilkenny is the perfect place to lay down roots,” Cllr Coonan concluded.
Cllr. Andrew McGuinness seconded the motion and hailed Mr Langton’s unwavering support for the community throughout his career.
“Eamon Langton has made an exceptional contribution to Kilkenny through his lifetime, not just through his business success but through his support for the arts, community events and the life of the city,” he commented.
“This honour is richly deserved and reflects the high regard in which he is held by people across Kilkenny.”
Mr Langton on receiving the Freedom of the City said: “To receive the Freedom of the City is a huge personal honour for myself. As a proud Kilkenny man, it ranks as one of the greatest achievements of my life.”
The iconic businessman said he was “ truly grateful” and “deeply humbled” by the accolade, thanking his family and the people of Kilkenny.
