Kilkenny's Burnchurch will perform at Up For the Match
Young Kilkenny-based band Burnchurch were recently tasked with writing and performing a song for RTÉ’s Up for the Match, in preparation for this year’s Kilkenny vs Limerick All Ireland Final.
The group produced ‘It’s Coming Home,’ an adaptation of Skylar Grae’s Coming Home, with a hurling-inspired twist. The group performed the song for RTÉ in Burnchurch Castle, surrounded by 200 members of their local GAA club. The song has been very well received countywide and has garnered significant attention.
Burnchurch are a four piece group made up of two pairs of brothers and sisters, Sadhbh (vocals, fiddle & piano), Síofra (vocals, flute & piano), Éanna (vocals, keys & pipes), and Ruairí (vocals, pipes & bass). The band takes its name from their native townsland in Kilkenny, the place that shaped their artistic journey. Coming from an Irish speaking family they draw inspiration from their native language, which they skilfully incorporate into their music. The group have been immersed in music from a young age, as their Dad and uncles were members of Na Casaidigh and as children they experienced many live gigs. In recent years their cousins Sibéal rose to prominence with her rendition of ‘Mise Éire’ and TG4 Ceoltóir Óg na Bliana Maitiú Ó Casaide is a member of the Bonny Men band.
With the release of their first song, Burnchurch won the 2FM Gaeltacht Tí competition. In 2021 they composed the heartfelt song “She” which was recorded alongside Loreto choir and orchestra, and has become the official Loreto anthem for 80,000 students worldwide. Recently the band featured in the music for Disney’s Star Wars, with acclaimed 2D Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon. As the band continue to make strides in their musical journey, Burnchurch are preparing for their debut album release later this year. Packed with original songs that blend their Irish music influence with a contemporary pop/rock sound, the album promises to be a testament to the band’s unique sound and immense talent. The band’s groundbreaking music and uplifting live performances promises a bright future.
Burnchurch will be part of the KCLR Match previews on Friday night at Matt The Millers.
Their most recent release, ‘In This Life’ can be listened to on their Spotify and you can follow the group @burnchurchmusic on Instagram.
