Across the world, generations of children owe their education to a Kilkenny man.
Born in Westcourt, Callan, during the time of the Penal Laws, Blessed Edmund Ignatius Rice built a successful career in business before the tragic death of his wife changed the course of his life.
He sold his business interests and started a school for poor boys in a converted stable in Waterford.
He used his own funds to build a monastery for his new congregation, and school for boys, at Mount Sion outside Waterford in 1802.
Today the Brothers of Edmund Rice are working in 30 countries across five continents.
Pope John Paul II beatified him on October 6, 1996.
