OSSORY Youth have a number of innovative events planned to celebrate Africa Day which takes place next Wednesday (May 25).
A Volunteer Fair will take place at The Set Theatre from 5pm to 7pm. This is a free event for anyone who wants to find out the volunteering opportunities that are available which range from manning a shop for a few hours a week to working for a year in Africa. There will also be local, national and international agencies presenting their best opportunities, for a wide range of skills and availability - from one off weekends to regular commitments. Later that night Congolese band ‘The Lace’ will perfom from 8.30pm in The Set Theatre and tickets are priced at 10 euro and 8euro. On Friday Loreto school hosts the Africa Cup soccer blitz for city national schools (for more details contact Kilkenny Recreation Sports Partnership on 056 7720870). On Friday Ossory Youth and The Drum get together for a fun night (for youngsters aged from12 years up), playing African games and having African snack food.
The celebrations will wrap on with an Africa Day Family Fun Day on Sunday (May 29) at The Parade from 2pm to 5pm will promises to be a colourful afternoon with African food tasting, arts and crafts display, face painting, hair-braiding, a mask-making workshop, arts workshop, an Irish Trad band, Sudanese dance, Irish dancing troupe, hip-hop, bouncy castle and a treasure hunt quiz.
