A classical Christmas

The Kilkenny Chamber Orchestra will perform its Christmas concert tomorrow (Thursday) at 8.15pm in the Kilkenny Design Centre cafe.

The programme will include familiar tunes from the orchestra’s repertoire such as the dramatic Holberg Suite by Grieg, Sleepers Awake by Bach, Mozart’s Divertimento no 1, Mascagni’s Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana, and festive tunes for the Christmas season.

The Kilkenny Chamber Orchestra is an amateur ensemble of approximately 20 string, wind and brass players from Kilkenny and Carlow, conducted by William McGlynn. The chamber orchestra provides a focal point and arena for amateur adult musicians to meet other musicians, develop their practice as part of an orchestra, and their knowledge and appreciation of classical music in general. It also gives up-and-coming professional soloists from Kilkenny the opportunity to play with an orchestral accompaniment.

Since September 2009 the chamber orchestra has set itself up as an independent voluntary group open to all practising musicians in the Kilkenny area. The ensemble provides an opportunity to those who wish to continue their youth orchestra experiences into adulthood, while offering the public at large the chance to experience classical music.

The musical director of the orchestra is William McGlynn, a professional classical and jazz musician. A double bass and guitar player, Mr McGlynn has extensive experience with a range of musical groups and genres and the playing of the orchestra as an ensemble has developed in great strides under his experienced direction and practical guidance.
