The RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet will perform a concert on this Saturday at 8pm in the Black Abbey, Kilkenny as part of the Music In Kilkenny concert series.
The string quartet will begin their programme with Haydn’s Quartet No. 2, Op.76, nicknamed “Quinten” or “Fifths,” referring to the four opening notes of the music, falling fifths, incidentally known to many of us as the world famous first four notes of Big Ben’s chime.
Next up is Shostakovich’s Ninth Quartet, which the composer considered to be “completely different” from his previous writing, dedicating it to Irina, his third wife and completing it in 1964. The evening’s entertainment will continue with Arvo Parts’ deeply spiritual Summa and conclude with Beethoven’s sombre yet witty Quartet No. 4, Op. 18.
The concert will be recorded by RTÉ for broadcast at a future date. Tickets are €15 (€10 concession) at the door.
