Cllr Seán Ó hArgáin (Kilkenny City MD) has got a motion passed at full council seeking that Kilkenny County Council ‘commences the process of investigating the possibility of making a bid for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann to return to Kilkenny City in the future’.

The last time Kilkenny City hosted The Fleadh was back in 1988, and Cllr Ó hArgáin feels the timing is right to welcome its return.

“I came here to The Fleadh in the 80s and saw Kilkenny as a vibrant place to be,” he told elected members at this week’s plenary meeting of Kilkenny County Council.

“It helped put Kilkenny on the map,” he added, further stating that Kilkenny could be in a position to make a bid for the festival in 2027.

Cllr Ó hArgáin also called for the establishment of a group to look at the possibility of hosting The Fleadh in a bid to get the ball rolling.

His motion was supported by fellow elected members.

Director of Services at Kilkenny County Council, Tim Butler stated that the local authority can commence a feasibility study examining the city and county’s ability to host The Fleadh, and take it from there.
