Kilkenny has ranked 4th for the lowest social benefits per person in 2023, according to new data revealed by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) on Wednesday.
Figures show that Kilkenny had the fourth lowest social benefits in Ireland at €6,236 per person, with the lowest values recorded in Meath (€5,744 per person), Kildare (€5,842) and Dublin (€5,897).
Disposable income in Co. Kilkenny was €25,699 per person in 2023, which was nearly 10% below the national average.
Commenting on the findings, financial expert at the National Pension Helpline James Dorrian said the data also reveals that only 22% of Kilkenny employees' compensation comes from foreign enterprises.
“This is the third lowest figure in Ireland, and much lower than the 40% of employees' compensation from foreign companies in Dublin,” he said.
Mr Dorrian explained that social benefits and other transfers are those made to households by the State, intended to relieve households of financial risks or burdens.
“Disposable income is defined by the CSO as primary income plus social benefits and other transfers, after taxes on income and social insurance contributions are deducted.”
“After wages and salaries, social benefits make up the largest component of disposable income across Ireland.”
