Sinn Féin MEP for Ireland South Kathleen Funchion has criticised US President Donald Trump’s proposal to impose 100% tariffs on foreign films, calling the plan 'nonsensical' and warning that it poses a serious threat to Ireland’s thriving film industry.

“Ireland’s film industry has become a global success story in recent years, attracting major US productions like Star Wars and Game of Thrones, and creating thousands of skilled jobs across the country," said MEP Funchion.

“This reckless proposal from President Trump risks derailing that progress. It could lead to serious job losses and widespread uncertainty across the sector.

“We urgently need clarity from the US administration on how these tariffs would be applied, particularly for productions already in planning or underway. The ambiguity is causing real concern across the industry.

“Government must act now to safeguard our creative sector. We need immediate engagement with the US and a plan to protect the incredible growth we have built in film and television production.”
