What started as a love of making dog bandanas has grown into one of Kilkenny’s most beloved dog-friendly businesses.

Annette McGarry opened Finn & Penny just over a year ago on James’ Street in Kilkenny City.

The shop is a haven for dog owners and their four-legged companions, combining homemade treats, stylish accessories, and even coffee and donuts for humans.

“I lived in Florida for nearly 30 years,” said Annette. “When I moved back, I was making bandanas for dogs, just for fun at first. But people liked them and an idea of starting a shop sprang from there.”

Those handmade accessories are still stocked in-store today, but the shop has expanded its offering to include premium items such as Lupi Paws harnesses, collars and leashes.

“There’s something for every shape and size,” she said. “We’ve just brought in their tactical, tweed and reversible ranges too.”

Finn and Penny also caters to the growing number of pet owners looking to stimulate their dogs with toys like snuffleballs.

“They keep dogs entertained and help with anxiety too,” Annette said.

The store also stocks Atlas and Tail’s 100% natural meat pâté, suitable for both cats and dogs.

Dog owners can also find Mamo brand pet products in stock, a gentle, plant-based range of care items for pets. “It’s a lovely, ethical brand and a great fit for what we want to offer,” Annette said.

She also carries a selection of quality dog beds and other animal treat products that balance comfort, quality and sustainability.

Annette bakes all her dog treats in-house and now offers custom dog-friendly cakes for birthdays and special occasions.

“It’s a bit of fun. People celebrate their dogs just like family, and why not?”

The bakery menu includes blueberry bones, carrot bones, pupcakes, frozen fruit cups and even picnic lunches for dogs.

Any products that contain peanut butter use 100% dog-friendly all natural peanut butter.

Also in stock are Kilkenny jerseys for your beloved doggy campanion - a great way to show county pride.

“We’ve jerseys in all sizes, from extra-small to extra-large,” she said.

“Poppy, my own rescue dog, wears a medium. She gets a lot of attention in the window and many people stop to take photos of her or just to peek inside to see what’s new.

“Even if you’re just passing by, pop in. There’s always something different, and a free puppuccino for the dogs.”

Where possible, Annette sources her stock locally and builds relationships with trusted suppliers.

“It’s important to me to support Irish brands and local makers whenever I can,” she said.

Annette is also keen to highlight the importance of supporting local shops, particularly those trying something different.

“It’s great to see so many new dog-friendly businesses and initiatives popping up around Kilkenny,” she said. “But they need support to keep going. So don’t be afraid to pop in with your doggie and have a look.”
