What’s the plan for the next 12 month?

The plan is to take on a new member of staff this year and expand the business in other areas. We currently offer recruitment in a broad range of sectors but we are looking to add additional services to the business. Watch this space!!!

Has what you do now always been your aspiration?

It has always been my aspiration to work for myself, yes. Recruitment is an industry I really enjoy, a busy, busy sector with the constant need to be changing to stay ahead of the game. Ten-plus years in and I’m still really enjoying it, even in these tough times.

Who or what was your greatest influence?

My parents naturally had substantial influence on me with regard to learning the value of working hard. I also admire people like Brian Cody and Alan Sugar – sustained success over a long period – that is a rare achievement.

What was your first job, and what did you learn?

Working in the forestry in Kilkenny. Early starts at 6am to travel up mountains around the country looking for Christmas trees (1-foot-high trees, I might add). What did I learn – Don’t be late, nobody will wait for you! Great education.

What’s been your greatest success?

Starting a family with my wife, Mary. Also returning home to Kilkenny and starting my own business. I had a business previously in Dublin, but it gives me greater satisfaction to be working out of Kilkenny. I love living in Kilkenny and to be able to work in Kilkenny every day is an absolute pleasure.

What valuable lesson have you learned in the midst of recession?

Hard work is essential, but also keep an eye on changes in your business environment and work to combat those changes.

What should be done at a local level in Kilkenny?

Kilkenny needs to use its assets – its people and its location. It is a great place to do business but we need to educate potential business employers about the positives of being based in Kilkenny.

Any changes planned this year in your company?

We hope to expand by adding additional services to the company!

What advice would you give to anyone starting a business?

When you have the idea, you’re ready to start your own business. People who work for themselves can see the benefits.

If you want to spoil yourself, what’s your favourite treat?

Family time on Sunday and I enjoy walking in the Slieve Blooms in Laois with my dog Roxy.

Any reading recommendations?

I enjoying sporting biographies. I just finished Johnny Giles book and I have just started Lance Armstrong’s (the cyclist) bio. From a business prospective Who Moved My Cheese by Spencer Johnson – an excellent motivational book.

You have a few bob to spare – where would you invest?

Farming – it seems to be the big growing area (excuse the pun) at the minute.

What’s the last movie you saw?

Jaws (it was on TV again recently) – a classic!

Are you any good in the kitchen?

Depends who you ask!! The dog likes my cooking, my son doesn’t!! What does that tell you?

Do you take work home?

Yes, it’s only natural when working for yourself, but I am improving.

Any hints for switching off?

Playing golf, jogging and soccer.
