A water scheme in south Kilkenny has become the first in the whole South East to go online with a solar powered group water scheme!
The Caherleske Coolagh Group Water Scheme (GWS) is located a short distance from Callan, and this week members of community water schemes travelled to the rural location to learn about the ground breaking project.
Caherleske Coolagh GWS services 155 homes, 46 farms, a church, kindergarten and community hall. On an average day it provides 55,000 gallons to water.
Recently the GWS installed 18 solar panels to produce electricity to help power one of its pumping stations, at Kyle West. At maximum output, on a good, sunny day, the panels can produce up to 14KW of electricity.
On Thursday people involved with group water schemes in several neighbouring counties came along to meet the local group and find out about the project - including grant funding options and operational information.
