Lorry crashes into local shop window - Kilkenny People Rewind

Kilkenny People Archive 1965 - On Saturday evening, a cattle lorry and trailer with 26 cattle moved off without the driver, and ended up 50 yards away, having broken a plate glass window and an adjoining doorway in Mr Shelly's premises, Callan.

The lorry is owned by Mr John Armstrong, cattle trader, Talbot street, Dublin. The driver, Mr W Dow, had a remarkable escape. He tried to get into the cab as the lorry moved nearer the churchyard wall and, seeing the danger at the last moment, changed his mindwall and he would probably have been crushed to death.

The truck gained momentum as it careered on its way and carried off a car belonging to Mrs Maisie O'Shea on its side. The car was parked outside Mrs O'Shea's hairdressing premises. It continued across Green street, the main Kilkenny-Clonmel thorough- fare and mounted the footpath before it crashed against the window of Mr Shelly's shop. It was fortunate there were no pedestrians or traffic on the street at the time of the accident.
