This Kilkenny town has had challenges but looks forward to a bright future

While frustrations around the by-pass and Kings River delays are understandable and spark plenty of debate, especially online, there is another side to Callan’s story that deserves recognition.

Over recent years, the town has seen the emergence of vibrant new housing estates and a steady growth in population, which has brought fresh energy and diversity to the community.

Local amenities and facilities have expanded, making day-to-day life more convenient and enjoyable for residents old and new.

Covid-19, though challenging, also highlighted the strength and adaptability of Callan’s local economy. Many residents reconnected with their town, discovering the range of goods and services available from local businesses.

Shops, service stations, and hardware stores not only weathered the storm but often found new customers and increased support from the community, a trend which has continued well beyond the pandemic’s peak.

So, is Callan being left behind? Not according to the evidence. Instead, Callan appears to be undergoing a structured revitalisation.

Strategic investments in heritage, housing, infrastructure, energy, and mobility. Ongoing community-oriented planning and engagement. A proactive approach to climate resilience and economic sustainability.

These efforts reflect a co-ordinated vision for the town’s future, with tangible initiatives already underway and a clear commitment to inclusive growth.

Such comprehensive planning ensures that Callan remains well-positioned to adapt to emerging challenges and seize new opportunities within the region.

In July 2025, an additional €27,245, bringing the total investment to €151,785 was allocated for flood mitigation works, including pumping upgrades and protective measures for vulnerable properties in Callan.

A mobility management study for 2021 to 2026 focuses on enhancing walking and cycling links, traffic management, off-street parking, and the accessibility of local heritage and cultural sites.

These are just some of the projects that have and are being enacted in Callan.

In short, no, Callan is not being left behind. On the contrary, it’s on a clear and well-supported track toward regeneration and sustainability, with tangible public, civic, and community-led initiatives shaping its future.

The town’s ongoing transformation is evident in its approach to inclusive development and its readiness to meet the demands of modern living.

So, we honestly should look at the glass half full when it comes to our town, there are lots of positives and certainly there will be more to come.

As far as the Kings River and by-pass projects are concerned, there needs to be a more concerted effort from our public servants to get these well overdue projects completed.

Saying that, rattling a few cages doesn’t do any harm...
