Church of the Immaculate Conception, Castlecomer
Teresa Hetherington, Angela Byrne and Joe Fitzpatrick received the papal award, the Benemerenti Medal, at Mass in the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Castlecomer on Friday evening.
The Benemerenti Medal is a medal awarded by the Pope to members of the clergy who provide an outstanding service to their parish, first awarded in 1831.
Joe Fitzpatrick, Maryville, was the bell ringer over many decades on both sad and happy occasions.
Teresa Hetherington, Market Square has given sterling service as a Eucharist Minister, a member of the Parish Liturgy and Pastoral Committees and as Church Reader Co-Ordinator.
Angela Byrne, Barrack Hill was part of a sacristy team helping out Maureen Kelly before taking on the role full time herself. She served that role with distinction. This was a proud occasion for the recipients and their families.
Monsignor Ryan requested these medals through Bishop Coll from Pope Francis to recognise the wonderful and dedicated service which they have given to the parish over many years.
