The annual Mayor’s Christmas Appeal is in full swing for the festive period with over €3,000 already generated from the Mayor’s Christmas Concert which was held in the Watergate Theatre last month.

Over the Christmas season, a number of fundraisers are held in conjunction with the Mayor and the Defence Forces in Kilkenny with all Monies donated to the Lions Club, who will distribute it to local organisations like St Vincent de Paul, Amber Women’s Refuge Centre, Kilkenny Social Services and others.

“The relationship between the Mayor’s office and James Stephens Barracks has always been there, as far back as I can remember,” Mayor Andrew McGuinness said.

“Every year we always raise over €10,000,” Cllr McGuinness stated, adding how he hoped the tradition and long-standing relationship will continue into the future.

“On behalf of Lions, we are honoured and thankful for the help of our partners and the work that both organisations do,” Lions Club president Gerry McGovern, commented.

“At the end of the day it’s all about helping people and organisations in need in Kilkenny and we’re very pleased to be involved.”

Over the month of December, the army’s contribution on the ground will be substantial with busking and the delivering of hot meals on Christmas Day among the many ways they will lend their support to the cause.

A distribution of funds to the relevant charities was held on Monday evening. All parties are requesting any person or family in need of help asked during the Christmas period to come forward where they will be treated respectfully and confidentiality.

“Our primary motive is raising money for the less well off,” Lions PRO Phillip O’Neill added.
