Local councillors have again raised some of the issues arising from the new changes to parking implemented in recent weeks.
They brought a notice of motion at this week’s city municipal meeting calling for a number of amendments to be made.
It’s clear that the sentiment from a number of city centre traders and members of the public is that the new measures and increased charges go too far.
There is an appetite for having less traffic and a more sustainable city, but the right approach must be found, and balance struck. No one wants to see a situation where would-be shoppers are incentivised to go elsewhere, or where people who have to travel into the city for work are unfairly penalised.
It’s a wider national issue too, where the Government is attempting to disincentivise the use of private vehicles in favour of other means of transport. However, the requisite improvements in public transport need to be in place. It can’t be a case of putting the cart before the horse.
It’s welcome to see the uptake of Kilkenny’s city bus is improving, and more and more people are opting to cycle or walk, choosing sustainable transport and physical activity. Of course, not everyone can cycle or walk — some have to travel in from far distances. Others may have mobility issues that limit their ability to walk or cycle, and their needs must be met also.
AFFORDABLE HOMES
It’s great to see the launch of the first scheme of Affordable Homes in Kilkenny under the Local Authority Affordable Purchase Scheme.
The council has announced the upcoming application process for 35 newly-built homes in the city.
The houses are generally targeted at first-time buyers (exceptions apply) who need assistance bridging the gap between their own available funds, the mortgage that they can obtain and the cost of the new home. Hopefully, the scheme will be a great success.
