So far this year, 26 custody logs associated with 'sexual offences' have been recorded in the Garda PULSE Database for the Kilkenny/Carlow Division.
This figure is already greater than the 24 custody logs recorded for the same category of offences in the division in 2022.
Over the last eleven years, 2019 was the year with the highest number (40) of custody logs for 'sexual offences' recorded in the division.
These figures were recently released in Dáil Éireann following a request to the Minister of Justice Helen McEntee from Deputy Peadar Tóibín.
Minister McEntee, stated that 'government is deeply committed to tackling sexual violence and sexual crime in all its forms'.
"Working to ensure that victims feel empowered to report sexual crimes and that when they do, they are fully supported at every stage of their interaction with our justice system, has been a priority for me as Minister for Justice," she added.
"Building the confidence of victims is a cornerstone of the actions set out in Supporting a Victim’s Journey. The implementation of this important action plan is continuing and a number of key actions have already been delivered."
