Kilkenny man DJ Carey
Kilkenny hurling legend DJ Carey is due back in court today in relation to fraud-related offences.
The five-time All-Ireland winner stands accused of inducing people to pay him money by fraudulently claiming to have cancer. He previously appeared in court in September when he was charged with the 21 offences.
Most of the charges are that on unknown dates at unknown locations within the state, the defendant "did dishonestly by deception" induce a variety of named individuals "to do an act to wit make a monetary payment to you after you fraudulently claimed to have cancer and needed finances to obtain treatment for same with the intention of making a gain for yourself or causing loss to another". Contrary to Section 6 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act 2001.
Two of the charges are of using "an instrument which was and which you knew or believed to be, a false instrument with the intention of inducing another person to accept it as genuine and by reason of so accepting the said instrument to do some act or to make some ommission or to provide some service, to the prejudice of that person or any other person”.
Mr Carey has not yet made a reply to any of the charges, and he has not yet entered pleas to the charges.
