Jailed for theft from retail premises in Kilkenny

Major protest to take place at courthouse in Kilkenny

Stealing two Northface jackets worth a total of €400 from a retail premises on Parliament Street in Kilkenny resulted in a four month prison sentence for a defendant before Kilkenny District Court.

Adel Atal, Kilkenny Inn, Vicar Street, Kilkenny pleaded guilty to the offence at Parliament Street on October 1o, 2023. The court heard that at 4.30pm on the date in question he entered the retail premises and stole the jackets.

The defendant also pleaded guilty to intoxication in a public place and to engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour.

The court heard that the defendant was observed by gardaí acting in an aggressive manner and in a highly intoxicated state on John Street in Kilkenny on November 11, 2023 and was also observed being intoxicated at Vicar Street, Kilkenny on November 21, 2023.

The defendant is a 30-year-old refugee from Algeria was living at the time in Vicar Street and now lives in a refugee centre in Cork.

Judge Geraldine Carthy imposed a four-month prison sentence.
