A man who admitted to gardaí he ‘had a bit of weed’ has been convicted of drugs charges.

Alexej Zavadskis, 25 Rosehill Crescent, Kilkenny, was charged with two counts of being in illegal possession of drugs and one count of having drugs for sale or supply.

On April 27, 2024, at 10.20pm, gardaí observed Mr Zavadskis acting suspiciously, at High Street. He was searched under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Mr Zavadskis told gardaí he had ‘a bit of weed’.
A packet of cannabis, valued at €5 to €10, was found in his pocket.

On May 5, 2025, Mr Zavadskis was again observed acting suspiciously. He was searched by gardaí and found to have two wraps of what he called ‘coke’.
During interview at Kilkenny Garda Station, Mr Zavadskis said he had intended to sell the drugs. It was valued at €2,000.

The court heard the defendant had seven previous convictions.

Solicitor Chris Hogan asked the court to give his client credit for being cooperative with the gardaí.

Mr Zavadskis previously had an addiction to drugs but seems to be doing well now. He is serving a prison sentence on another matter, has undertaken a number of courses there and signed up for an apprenticeship.

Mr Hogan said his client had made mistakes as a young man.

Judge Geraldine Carthy said an aggravating factor in this case was that the defendant had a previous conviction for the sale or supply of drugs.

On the charge of having drugs for sale or supply Mr Zavadskis was convicted and a prison sentence of eight months imposed. Two charges of being in illegal possession of drugs were taken into account.
