A man has been jailed for seven months for the ‘very serious’ offence of assaulting a garda while he was acting in the course of his duty.
Brian Ferry, Coon East, Bilboa, Carlow, pleaded guilty to the charge and two other charges: resisting or wilfully obstructing a garda, and being intoxicated in public.
The charges arose from an incident where it took three gardaí to get Mr Ferry into the garda vehicle, on his arrest.
Garda Eoin Ryan gave evidence that on Saturday, April 13, 2024, he responded to a domestic call with another garda. They were made aware that one of the people who had left the scene in a vehicle was possibly intoxicated.
The gardaí proceeded to patrol the area and were told a person matching the description of that individual was at a garage in Moneenroe.

On reaching the location the gardaí saw the vehicle. It had a flat tyre and the back window was broken.
The gardaí saw Mr Ferry and when he saw them he ‘took off running around the back of the garage’.
The gardaí separated, one going left and the other right, around the garage.
When Garda Ryan rounded the corner he saw Mr Ferry acting in a ‘very aggressive’ manner towards the other garda, taking off his jacket.
Mr Ferry smelled strongly of alcohol and his eyes were glazed.
He shouted abuse at the gardaí, telling them to “f*** off you c****.” He swung his elbow at Garda Ryan and his arm at the other garda. Click NEXT to continue reading...
