Mixing cider and champagne at a wedding led to a man coming before Kilkenny District Court on a charge of using threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour.

Ethan Cronin, 22 Ballycurrane, Thurles, Co Tipperary, pleaded guilty to the charge.

Sergeant Morgan O’Connor told the court that on May 2, 2025, gardaí were called to a Kilkenny hotel. Mr Cronin and another man had been arguing and he was asked to leave the premises. He became abusive and gardaí were called. He was arrested.

Solicitor Alex Rafter said his client had been in Kilkenny for a wedding and it was late in the night. Mr Cronin mixed his drinks — he was drinking cider then, unfortunately, drank champagne, the solicitor explained. His client is not someone who gets in trouble, Mr Rafter added.

Judge Cephas Power observed that a suspended sentence seems to have worked for Mr Cronin in the past. He convicted the defendant and imposed a two month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, to encourage his rehabilitation.
