Gardaí in Kilkenny City fined 17 motorists €2,040 after catching them using phones behind the wheel, totalling 51 penalty points

Garda operation sees 17 motorists caught for same offence in Kilkenny

On 10 July 2025, the Roads Policing Unit (RPU) of An Garda Síochána Kilkenny carried out a focused operation in Kilkenny City to curb mobile phone use at the wheel.

Over the course of the day, 17 drivers were detected holding a phone while driving.

Each offence carries three penalty points, bringing the total to 51 points, and fines amounted to €2,040 in all.

Motorists are reminded that under current law, all hand-held phone use while driving is prohibited, with gardaí empowered to impose on-the-spot fines and penalty points.

Kilkenny drivers are urged to “get the point, not the points” by stowing their phones safely and focusing fully on the road ahead.
