Blackmail/ extortion, aggravated burglary charges - Two appear in Kilkenny Court

Men also charged with threatening to damage property

Two men are to go on trial in Kilkenny charged with offences including blackmail and extortion and aggravated burglary, following an alleged incident at a home in the south of the county.

At Kilkenny District Court both men were presented with books of evidence in the case.
Gary Malone, 2 Mount Garrett Terrace, New Ross, is charged with: threatening to damage property; aggravated burglary; burglary; and blackmail/ extortion.

His co-accused Rhys Mahon, 33 St Ronan’s Crescent, Clondalkin, Dublin, is facing three charges: threatening to damage property; aggravated burglary; and blackmail/ extortion.

Garda Damien Quirke gave evidence, to the court, of putting one new charge, of aggravated burglary, to both men, before the court sitting.
He said Mr Malone made no reply when charged after caution.
Mr Mahon said: “I didn’t do it.”

Sergeant Morgan O’Connor said the Director of Public Prosecutions had consented to the matter going forward to Kilkenny Circuit Court for trial on indictment.

Both men were given the usual alibi warning, by District Court Judge Geraldine Carthy.
The matter was then sent forward to the current sittings of Kilkenny Circuit Court.
Legal aid was granted to the defendants.

Both men were remanded on bail with conditions including they do not contact the alleged victim in this matter and they stay away from each other.
Conditions also include an undertaking to sign on at a garda station, three times a week, and be contactable by gardaí at all times.
