A man has been convicted of the murder of a Kilkenny man, at London's Old Bailey.

John Mackey (87) was originally from Callan and had moved to the UK city as a young man. He died in hospital from injuries inflicted on him during a robbery as he walked home from the shops. He passed away in hospital two days after he was injured, on Thursday, May 8.

Peter Augustine, 59, was charged with the Kilkenny man's murder and had denied the charge. However, a jury has convicted him. He is due to be sentenced on November 28 next.

Mr Mackey  left Callan for London in the 1950s and settled in the Finsbury Park area. Always a proud Irishman, he was also a lifelong Arsenal supporter and uncle to 22 nieces and nephews.

In June, Mr Mackey's remains were brought home for burial in Callan.
