A man, with 69 previous convictions, who admitted stealing ten cans of beer was handed down a suspended sentence at Kilkenny District Court.
James Carthy, 6A New Building Lane, Kilkenny admitted the offence which took place at Spar on the Callan Road on August 6, 2024.
The court heard that on the date in question the defendant went to the off-licence in the premises and removed ten cans of beer, valued at €22.50, which were not recovered.
The court heard that the defendant has 69 previous convictions, including convictions for theft and burglary.
Solicitor Chris Hogan told the court that his client was intoxicated at the time of the offence and has a difficulty with alcohol.
“He had a deal with the shop owner that he could get beer and pay for it later but it had to be said in advance,” said Mr Hogan who added that this did not happen on the date in question.
Mr Hogan also informed the court that the shop now has different owners.
Judge Cephas Power directed that €22.50 be paid over to the injured party and imposed a six-month sentence which he suspended on condition that the defendant be of good behaviour and keep the peace.
