Driver who led garda car chase across South Kilkenny convicted of dangerous driving

Kilkenny District Court

‘Not real gardaí’
Ms Farrell continued to abuse the gardaí and again said they were ‘not really gardaí’ and ‘had no powers of arrest’. She called them “thugs” on numerous occasions.
Another garda came to the assistance of Garda Curran.

Ms Farrell was handcuffed with her hands to her front. She used her elbows to hit the other garda twice.
The abusive language continued. Ms Farrell was taken to Kilkenny Garda Station where she was charged.

Garda Curran said he attempted to make a lawful demand for Ms Farrell’s insurance and tax documents but she would not engage with him at all. She refused to comply with any direction or request made of her.

When she was being arrested she ‘tried to resist everything,’ the garda said, adding “the whole thing was quite embarrassing.”

Garda Jamie Doyle was on patrol with Garda Curran. He said when they were arresting her, Ms Farrell was flailing her arms, swinging her elbows and shouting. She did not comply with the garda directions.

Assistance was called by the gardaí. When Ms Farrell was being placed in the back of the garda van she struck a garda with her elbows.

Judge Geraldine Carthy convicted Ms Farrell on all charges.

Inspector Barry Smith said Ms Farrell had a number of previous convictions, including five for driving without a licence and six for driving without insurance.
The judge said she had no option but to issue a bench warrant for Ms Farrell for sentencing.
