Tributes have been paid to well-known Kilkenny man Brian O' Callaghan, Crannagh Hall, Talbot's Inch, Freshford Road, Kilkenny City, who has passed away.
Brian passed away peacefully at St Vincent's Hospital on January 11, 2023, surrounded by his loving family after a short illness.
Brian was a former President of Kilkenny Lions Club, notably chosen to take on the role at a particularly prestigious time when the club celebrated its golden jubilee in 2017. His father, John was one of the charter (founder) members in 1967 when the Kilkenny Club was formed.
In 1980 Brian joined and served as secretary, during which time he became a member of the national executive and served as zone chairman before being elected club President in 1987. In 1996 he received the international Melvin Jones award for his work with Kilkenny Lions.
Peter, Brian’s son, joined the club in 2011, making the O’Callaghan family unique in having three generations serving in the Lions Club.
During his time as president, Brian said that the motto of the Lions was at the forefront of everything they did; ‘to serve.’
Brian was predeceased by his parents, John and Rosaleen, and sister Mary. Deeply regretted by his loving wife Cynthia, children David, Paul, John, Shirley, Peter, Caroline and his beloved Mingha, his sister Barbara, brothers-in-law Maurice and Seán, fifteen adoring grandchildren, son-in-law, daughters-in-law and nieces. Sadly missed by relatives and friends, Kilkenny Lions Club and colleagues in the Insurance Industry.
The family would like to thank all the staff in St Vincent's Private Hospital, with special mention to those in the Hazel Ward for their fantastic care of Brian.
FUNERAL DETAILS
Reposing at his residence (R95CXY3) on Friday from 3pm, concluding with Rosary and Vigil Prayers at 7pm. Funeral Mass on Saturday in St Canice's Church at 10am followed by cremation at 2pm in The Island Crematorium, Ringaskiddy, Cork (P43DD71). Brian's Funeral Mass will be live streamed on www.stcanicesparish.ie.
