Well-known Kilkenny historian, Jim Maher, has died

The death has taken place of James (Jim) Maher of Circular Road, Kilkenny City.

Jim was a dedicated scholar and author who delved into Irish history with a passion for preserving and sharing the stories of significant figures and events.

Jim's academic journey began with his qualification as a teacher from St. Patrick's Training College in Dublin.

Throughout his career, Jim authored several notable books that shed light on pivotal periods in Irish history.

In 1987, he released his debut work, "The Flying Column West Kilkenny 1916-1921," which chronicled the events surrounding the Irish independence movement.

In 1998, Jim published "Harry Boland: A Biography," offering a comprehensive exploration of the life and contributions of the prominent Irish revolutionary. 

In 2011, he released "The Oath is Dead and Gone," which presented a thought-provoking analysis of this turbulent period in Irish history.

In 2015, he extended, updated, and reissued his debut work, presenting it under the title "In the Shade of Slievenamon," offering readers a more comprehensive understanding of the events surrounding the struggle for Irish independence.

Jim Maher will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to historical accuracy and his significant contributions to Irish historiography.

His meticulous research and insightful writing have left an enduring legacy, ensuring that the stories and struggles of the past are not forgotten. 

The well-known and respected local historian passed peacefully, in the presence of his family, on June 13.

Jim is the beloved husband of Mary and much loved father of Michael and Tom.

He will be sadly missed by his wife and sons, sisters Mairéad and Kathleen, daughters-in-law Denise and Isabelle, grandchildren Mika, Denis, Sophie, James and Luc, nephews, nieces, extended family, neighbours and friends.

Reposing in Johnston's Funeral Home, Johns Green, Kilkenny on Friday (June 16) from 5pm concluding with Rosary and Vigil Prayers at 7pm.

Requiem Mass on Saturday morning at 11am in St Mary's Cathedral.

Funeral afterwards to St Kieran's Cemetery. House private please.
