Spectacular non-native bird spotted in Kilkenny

A hoopoe bird, a non-native species notable for its distinctive crown of feathers, has been spotted in Kilkenny.

Freelance ornithologist Eric Dempsey brought the presence of the bird to the attention of his followers on social media in recent days.

"There's been a big influx of hoopoes into Ireland since the weekend," he posted.

"A classic class of 'over-shoot' migration where birds moving out of Africa into Europe overshoot their intended target aided by strong winds. Sahara dust also landed during the same weather.

"I was delighted to connect with [a] stunning hoopoe at a (private) site in County Kilkenny."

In his post, Eric attached a picture of a hoopoe (similar to the file photo above).

The hoopoe is easily recognised by its striking orange-brown plumage, black-and-white striped wings, and a prominent fan-like crest tipped with black.

Its name comes from its distinctive 'oop-oop-oop' call, which it uses to communicate with others.

It is considered a sacred bird in some cultures and is even mentioned in the Bible and the Quran.

In ancient Egypt, hoopoes were often depicted in hieroglyphics, symbolising protection and wisdom.
