Dumping in the Breagagh River
A ‘steady stream’ of rubbish bags being dumped in a city centre waterway has been condemned as ‘disgraceful’ by locals.
The Breagagh River, a tributary of the River Nore, has benefited from years of hard work by community groups to restore its good ecological status.
Sadly, last week a Kilkenny People reader sent in this photograph (above) showing one of what they say is a ‘steady stream of bags of rubbish being thrown into the Breagagh.’ It looks even more stark as a grey heron observes the environment

“This is not an unusual sight,” according to our reader, who hopes that by published the photograph it will raise awareness of this increasing habit.
Groups including Keep Kilkenny Beautiful, Kilkenny Anglers and LAWPRO played their part in removing tonnes of industrial, construction, agricultural and domestic rubbish from the river.
