Hundreds of applications submitted for solar infrastructure grant on Kilkenny farms

As the push for more renewable energy continues, 263 applications have been received from Kilkenny farms for a grant towards installing solar infrastructure in places such as shed roofs.

Farmers can claim up to 60% of the cost of installation of solar panels and battery systems with the average individual payment so far standing at €18,570.

Interest in the county has increased steadily since the scheme’s introduction with 67 applications received in 2023 rising to 82 in 2024 and 114 last year.

Of the 263 total applications, 154 have been accepted and 64 grants have been paid out. Nationally, over 5,500 applications were submitted with 3,183 of these successful so far while 1,232 farms have received their grant.

The figures were announced by Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon TD, who also stated that the total payments issued to date was €22.9 million.

The grant is a measure under the Targeted Agriculture Modernisation Scheme and commenting on the figures the Minister said: “The supports available are in keeping with my commitment to assist farmers to address climate and sustainability targets.”
