Two of Kilkenny's 'most treasured' outdoor amenity sites are set to be enhanced
Coillte’s Strategic Capital Investment Programme to benefit Jenkinstown and Ballyrafton Woods in Kilkenny
A significant investment is set to further enhance two of Kilkenny’s most popular outdoor amenity destinations - Ballyrafton Wood and Jenkinstown Wood.
The funding of €40,000 (announced under Coillte’s Strategic Capital Investment Programme) will support a series of improvements aimed at enhancing visitor experience and protecting the natural environment across both sites.
Councillor Pat Fitzpatrick described the announcement as “a fantastic boost”, highlighting the importance of both Ballyrafton Wood and Jenkinstown Wood to the community.
“These are two of Kilkenny’s most treasured outdoor amenities, enjoyed year-round by walkers, families, runners and nature lovers,” he said.
“I’m delighted to see this level of support being provided, particularly at a time of year when these areas are at their most beautiful, with bluebells currently in full bloom.”
The funding will see trail upgrades and improved way-marking signage introduced at Ballyrafton Wood, making the area more accessible and easier to navigate for visitors of all ages and abilities.
The site, located just outside Kilkenny City, is a popular walking destination known for its peaceful woodland paths.
Meanwhile, Jenkinstown Wood will benefit from the installation of a new wastewater treatment system that will support greater visitor numbers.
Jenkinstown offers two looped walks through surrounding forestry, with landmarks including St Colman’s Well visible along the route.
Cllr Fitzpatrick noted that continued investment is essential to ensure these amenities remain sustainable for future generations.
“Improvements like these not only enhance the visitor experience but will also help protect these natural assets,” he said.
“It’s vital we continue to invest in our outdoor spaces, which are so important for both locals and tourism.”
