Ballot boxes have been opened and the counting of Carlow Kilkenny votes in the presidential election is underway.
The Carlow Kilkenny presidential constituency is one of the biggest in this election. All the ballot boxes from the two counties are being counted at Kilkenny College school.
One of the immediate trends emerging is the number of 'spoiled' ballot papers - from people just putting a big 'X' on the ballot paper to the more 'creative' who have written messages like 'we don't need a president' to the erudite 'f*ck off.'
There are also a number of number 1 votes for Jim Gavin, who withdrew from the contest at an early stage.
A tally is underway here at Kilkenny College, made up of a team of cross-party activists. Among them are TDs Natasha Newsome Drennan and Catherine Callaghan (below), Senator Patricia Stephenson and MEP Kathleen Funchion (main photo).
