This year the ‘Maid of Avonmore’ at the Iverk Show becomes the ‘Maid of Tirlan.’
Maid class has been one of the annual highlight events not just of the cattle program but of the Iverk Show itself.
The class began in 1984 and the aim was, and still is, to identify yearling dairy heifers that will become superior dairy cows.
The first winner of the Maid of Avonmore competition was Andy Phelan, Dournane, Mooncoin.
That year the competition had a prize fund of £1,600.
Heifers had to qualify for the finals. There were six shows involved, namely Clonmel, Kilkenny, Tullow, Rathdowney, Tinahely and Iverk.
The final was at Iverk on Thursday the September 6, 1984.
