Increase in prices for cattle at Kilkenny Mart

Vibrant trade: All cattle types benefited

Cattle

Good news this week for all cattle producers, with a vibrant trade for all types in Kilkenny Mart last Thursday.

The noticeable increase in prices could be best depicted by the trade for Friesian bullocks where these types that were ranging from €1.60 to €1.85 per kilo a week or two ago were making between €1.70 to €2.30 per kilo with fleshed types to €2.40 per kilo.

The quality continental bullocks were ranging from €2.70 to €3.40 per kilo.

Beef animals were in short supply which would suggest that the concerted drop of prices by factories on a weekly basis has come to a halt, mainly due to a shortage of supply and better weather conditions.
Heifers and cull cows were also commanding excellent prices.

In the past few weeks there has been a marked increase in the number of cull bulls being sold in Kilkenny Mart with most sellers very satisfied with how they got on.

If you are not a regular person who sells cattle at the mart the requirements are simple.
All animals being offered for sale must be tested within the year and should have a tag in each ear.
To enter just contact Kilkenny Mart on 056 7721407 and have a chat with Annie, Anne Marie or myself regarding entering your specific animals.

Sheep
Monday’s sheep sale was smaller than the previous week with most lots meeting a better trade.
Butcher lambs ranged from €142 to €172 per head with factory types (48 kilo and under) €120 to €146 per head with store lambs meeting a good trade with prices from €85 to €119 per head for ewe lambs.

Cull ewes were also a better trade e.g. €70 to €260 per head.
Hogget ewes ranged from €180 to €260 with a number going home unsold.
This sale also included Kilkenny Pedigree Sheep Breeders first Multi Breed Ram Sale.
The bulk of the rams on offer were Suffolk and Charollais with prices ranging from €450 to €750 per head with all rams eligible for the SIS scheme.
Their next sale is Monday, September 25.

Many marts have started their weanling sale but here in Kilkenny we will hold our opening sale on Tuesday, October 3, with prizes for the top priced animals.
Further details from the mart office. After our summer break our first Autumn Dairy Sale takes place on Monday, September 25, with entries now being taken.

Cruise
Last weekend was perfect weather wise and myself herself and friends decided to take a cruse on the Barrow Princess from New Ross To Waterford with a stop off in one of Irelands oldest cities of a few hours where we had a lovely lunch and visited a few historic sites.
I suggest this is well worth doing and a great way of relaxing.
Until next time, enjoy the long awaited sunshine. Good buying, good selling and good luck.
