Kilkenny forest owners urged to seek advice before selling windblown trees

The positive progress made by the forestry sector in the mobilisation of windblown material in forests affected by Storm Éowyn, has been welcomed by Minister of State with responsibility for Forestry, Michael Healy-Rae TD.

However, he is also encouraging owners to seek professional advice before selling their windblown forest.

“I have seen reports in the media of a particular forestry operator targeting private forest owners. From the start I have said that landowners should not rush in and take the first offer they get for their timber.

“Forest owners with windblow may well have a valuable crop on the ground.

“Before making any sale, I would urge forest owners to seek professional advice from a registered forester or local Teagasc forestry adviser.

“Forest owners affected by windblow should ensure that they have a good contract and a good timber security system in place.”

The Minister continued: “A Timber Sales Contract is important to protect the interests of all parties. Consult your registered forester regarding your timber sales contract.
“No timber should leave a forest without a contract in place.

“A template Tree Sales Agreement is available on the Irish Timber Growers Association (ITGA) website, and I urge all forest owners to get independent advice before signing any timber contract.”

The Minister concluded: “A Timber Sales Dispatch System is extremely important for security and accountability regarding the movement of timber from the plantation. Your registered forester can provide advice on this aspect of the sale. A model Timber Sales Dispatch system is also available on the ITGA website.”
