Thursday’s cattle sale in Kilkenny could best be described as electric for the 850 cattle on offer.
The top call per kilo was for five Limousin weighing 395 kilo and made €1360 or €3.45 per kilo.
The €3 per kilo barrier was breached on a number of occasions both in the bullock and heifer ring.
Beef bullocks peaked at €3.25 per kilo, this price relating to two Limousin 665 kilo which made €2160.
In the heifer section a 590 kilo animal realised €1800 or €3.05 per kilo.
In the Friesian bullock section six Fr weighing 650 kilo were sold at €1500 or €2.31 per kilo.
A selection of top quality heifers all from the one herd who’s average weight was 610 kilo made €1655 per head or an average price of €2.72 per kilo an indication of the strength of the beef/ forward trade.
Cull cows are also selling very well with even Friesian types breaching the €2 per kilo barrier with continentals to €2.65 per kilo.

Monday’s sheep sale was a small affair but trade was improved by at €4 to €6 on last weeks returns with a top call of €173 and cull ewes and rams to €170.
Our dairy sales take place each and every Monday at 12.30pm with last Mondays sale included a clearance of 35 cows which ranged in price from €1150 to €1750 per head to average €1400 per head.
Fresh calved Friesian heifers ranged from €1200 to €1980 per head.
Next week we have another clearance sale of a closed herd 70 head which are magnificent stock with top EBIs and come highly recommended.
