The decision of the Brandonvale Creamery committee to withdraw from participation in the Avonmore region and to join with the Waterford Co-Op is causing a major furore throughout the dairying industry.
The Irish Agricultural Organisation Society are up in arms because they feel that the decision reverses an earlier commitment made by Brandonvale to participate in the Avonmore Farmers’ co-op an that could lead to a complete breakdown in the plans for the rationalisation of the industry.
“This could wreck the entire scheme, which has been carefully planned and which was arrived at by voluntary agreement,” said one IAOS official.
The matter is complicated by the proposed sale to Waterford Co-Op of the Graig mart, a number of directors of which are also shareholders in the Brandonvale co-op.
There is considerable interest throughout the South-East in the decision which the shareholders of Brandonvale creamery will make when they meet shortly.
The creamery committee have already decided by 6-4 majority with one abstention to break the agreement with the IAOS and join up with the Waterford Co-Op instead.
The full amalgamation and rationalisation of the Co-Operatives would mean that one of Ireland’s biggest and most important industries would be based in Kilkenny.
The new office block for Avonmore Farmers is planned for Kilkenny City - this administrative centre will service an area from the borders of Waterford and Cork right up to Dublin Airport.
In all, 23 Co-Op Societies in Kilkenny, Kildare, Laois and Tipperary have been designated in the IAOS plan to form the Avonmore Farmers Co-Op. To date 17 of these in Kilkenny, Tipperary, Laois and Kildare have formally voted to amalgamate.
FOLK MASSES IN ST MARY’S
In a move to get young people more involved in the liturgy of the Church folk masses are to be held regularly in St Mary’s Cathedral.
On the first Sunday of each month, beginning on Sunday next at 12 noon, mass will be sung by a folk choir with guitar and percussion accompaniment.
The choir, composed principally of boys and girls from the CBS and the Presentation Convent, is being coached by Michael Campion from Rathdowney, a clerical student from St Kieran’s College.
