Breathtaking performance combined with styling that is sporty and elegant, yet understated at the same time. These character traits are shared by all Audi S models.
The S model success story began back in 1990 with the Audi S2. It is set to continue with the latest editions in the form of the Audi S6 (saloon and avant), Audi S7 and Audi S8.
All three models will be launched simultaneously onto the Irish market in June. Audi Ireland announced price and order information for all versions.
The S6 saloon will be priced from €86,900 OTR, the S7 from €106,540 OTR and the S8 from €130,540 OTR. These new models underpin Audi Ireland’s claim to be the fastest growing brand in the premium C segment and cement its position as the top selling premium D segment brand in Ireland.
The new bi-turbo 4.0TFSI V8, incorporating cylinder on demand technology and a host of other advances, replaces the naturally aspirated V10 FSI engine in the all-new S6, S6 Avant and S8 models. The new unit improves economy by as much as 25%.
It is also at the heart of a completely new addition to the S quattro model Series – the new S7.
All are equipped with new ‘Cylinder on demand’ technology which will feature across other models in the Audi range in the coming months. Cylinder on demand effectively shuts down 4 of the 8 cylinders when the engine is at half load, thus drastically increasing efficiency.
When required, all 8 cylinders are available instantaneously resulting in no power loss. This technology leads to a 25% reduction in emissions for S8 (compared to the previous model, despite a 15% increase in power).
The S8 has been specifically tuned higher than both the S6 and S7 and has 520BHP in comparison to 420BHP in the S6 and S7.
Intelligent lightweight design has a major role to play in all Audi cars as highlighted through Audi Ultra. This is particularly true of the sporty S models. The Audi core expertise of lightweight design heralds considerable benefits for the driver.
This is exemplified through the Audi S8 which weighs a comparatively light 1,975kg. The body weighs just 231 kilograms; a conventional steel construction would be around 100 kilograms heavier. Total bodyweight for the S8 is up to 200kg lighter than similarly powered competitor models underlining Audis’ lead in this area.
Subtle yet eye-catching details signal the S model at the top position in their relative model series and each have nuances which mark them out from mere mortals.
There are numerous details inside and out which distinguish the extra-sporty Audi S models from the corresponding A models. Some of the most striking differentiating design features can be found on all Audi S models in varying forms.
It is these features which lend the Audi S model design its special character. On the outside, horizontal double chrome bars in the Audi single frame grille, aluminium mirrors, twin tailpipes at the rear, body coloured side sill trims and matt black brake callipers with the S model logo convey an air of exclusiveness at first glance. On the inside, S specific inlays, badging, instrument clusters, upholstery and welcome screens finish the look and re-enforce the power and prestige of these cars.
As befits an S model the standard equipment listing for the new models is exhaustive. The S6 adds items such as 19” S design alloys, air suspension, electrically adjustable seats, Xenon lights with LED daytime running lights and body coloured rear spoiler to the already comprehensive listing A6 customers enjoy. S7 customers enjoy additional items such as S Sports Seats, Navigation and Valcona Leather with S embossing.
The Audi S8 as the new leader of the S family is equipped as such. It comes equipped with features such as 20” S design alloy wheels, quattro with sport differential, Bose surround sound, metallic paint, DVD changer, LED headlights, carbon atlas inlays and acoustic glazing over and above normal A8 specification.
When it comes to power transmission, the S6 and S7 also exemplify Vorsprung durch Technik. Power is channeled through a fast-shifting, seven-speed S tronic transmission to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system, which incorporates a self-locking centre differential and torque vectoring. The S8 comes equipped with an 8 speed tiptronic gearbox which unites sportiness and efficiency.
It uses tall gears at low revs whenever possible, but downshifts quickly and comfortably when requested by the driver. The tiptronic delivers the power to a quattro drivetrain combining a self-locking centre differential with the sport differential on the rear axle. During dynamic driving, the lion’s share of the power flows to the outside wheel to literally push the large saloon into the corner.
All S models are fitted with Audi Drive Select as standard. It influences numerous features within the car, including the throttle pedal response, the shift points of the automatic transmission, the servo boost of the electromechanical steering and the characteristics of the adaptive air suspension. The driver can adjust the operation of these systems in five stages.
The all new S6, S7 and S8 are available to order from your local Audi dealer now and first customer deliveries can be expected in June 2012
