#FromTheArchives: Divorce granted to six couples in Kilkenny

The front page of the Kilkenny People on November 21, 1997 had several interesting stories:

With the right to divorce now enshrined in Irish law, six couples were granted a divorce this week in quick time - no contest regarding children or property, this newspaper reported. 

Also this week, the announcement came that elective orthopaedic surgery at Kilcreene Hospital was going to transfer to Waterford.

Details were in the plan, Shaping the future of Kilkenny’s Hospitals, which also heralded the closure of St Canice’s Hospital. St Luke’s was now to house a psychiatric unit.

A delegation from the area between Brownstown and Tennypark Cross approached the Council demanding re-alignment of the road between Callan and Kilkenny.

And the youth soccer players of Ajax endured a 20-0 defeat to Thomastown Utd.
