Down through the years the John Lockes GAA club look to the great 1957 team that won the club’s only senior hurling title.
This Sunday, members will commemorate that team by unveiling a special plaque at the clubhouse.
Three men who will be there on Sunday will be Milo Carey, who was one of the youngest members of that team, along with fellow players Jimmy Walsh - better known as Mr Boxing in local sporting circles - and Dr Sean Dunne, who came from Castlecomer, but worked in Callan during his student days with his aunt Anna Teehan and her husband Senator Paddy Teehan.
The panel also included this correspondent’s late father Paddy Stapleton, whose county senior medal is very much valued in the family to this day.
The achievements of that team continue to inspire generations of young hurlers within the club today, with many aspiring to bring a second senior title back in the future.
Sunday will be an afternoon of celebration as, in addition to the unveiling of the plaque, the clubhouse and facilities will be officially opened by Presidents Harry Bryan, Barrie Henriques and Barry Hickey.
In memory of a true gentleman and loyal clubman who is fondly remembered by all in John Lockes, the club will officially name the main function room the Br Damian Brennan room - a fitting tribute to a wonderful man.
Events begin at 2pm, with light refreshments served afterwards.
The club looks forward to welcoming everyone to John Locke Park this Sunday.
