BREAKING: Hurling star plans to purchase community 'complex' in Kilkenny

Wild Irish, co-founded by ex-Wexford hurling captain and GAA legend Diarmuid Lyng, are launching a crowdfunding campaign to purchase a complex in South Kilkenny

Hurling star plans to build an incredible community 'complex' in Kilkenny

The proposed centre will serve as a hub for language classes, music, arts, retreats and community events in South Kilkenny

A first-of-its-kind community initiative is underway to secure a permanent home for the Irish language and culture in South Kilkenny.

Wild Irish, co-founded by ex-Wexford hurling captain and TV pundit Diarmuid Lyng, with his partner, Performance Poet, Siobhán de Paor, are launching a crowdfunding campaign to purchase a complex that will 'ensure a space for cultural growth, education, native skills and crafts, language acquisition and a safe home for the children of our community'.

With the Irish language experiencing a revival and increased recognition in Ireland, this project is a direct response to the growing demand for spaces where the language and traditions can thrive, where land is utilised to serve not only the needs of the community, but also the surrounding nature.

The proposed centre will serve as a hub for language classes, music, arts, retreats and community events, reinforcing our cultural identity at a time when such spaces are disappearing.

"This isn’t just about a building; it’s about stepping outside the protections of Government agencies and recognised Gaelteacht areas," said Diarmuid Lyng.

"It represents a movement for the language out in to the Irish coutryside and it is unquestionably a beginning for such a movement. The language must be able to stand on its own two feet and we are setting out to show that it can.

"In the midst of a housing crisis and cultural erosion, we seek partnerships and donations from interests that wish to see our national heritage and culture protected by people that are working sincerely to build something sustainable for generations to come."

Supporters are invited to contribute to the crowdfunding effort and find out more about the project via fundrazr.com/wildirish, with funds going directly toward securing the property.

Diarmuid and Siobhán seek to create a balance of giving and receiving in support of their dream.
