John Donovan stands as one of Callan’s greats, a figure whose love for the town and the John Lockes club is unwavering. His devotion to every team that has donned the saffron and blue is profound and heartfelt.
Over the past three months, John has faced significant health challenges, spending an extended period in hospital, particularly under the care of staff at the University Hospital in Waterford. Recently, he was moved closer to home to Thomastown Rehabilitation Centre for intensive physiotherapy. This move is a step towards his eventual return home, a goal that everyone who knows him hopes he will achieve soon.

John’s absence has been felt on the streets of Kilkenny, where he was known for patrolling disabled parking spaces. His popularity has been evident from the numerous visitors he had in Waterford and the even greater number in Thomastown, much to the amazement of the staff there.
All wish John a speedy recovery, eagerly anticipating the day he will be back on Kilkenny’s streets and, most importantly, cheering on the John Lockes from the sidelines. His biggest dream is to see the club return to senior club hurling, with his nephew Ryan Donovan-Cooke and his cousin Ollie O’Donovan at the forefront of this resurgence.
John’s resilience and dedication serve as an inspiration to us all, reflecting the spirit and strength of the community he loves so dearly.
