Kilkenny GAA: 'We have to stop doing that' - Derek Lyng calls out unfair comparison

Kilkenny manager Derek Lyng

Kilkenny senior hurling manager Derek Lyng has urged supporters to assess the current senior panel on their own merits and not to compare them to teams of old.

The comments followed the Cats' memorable 5-19 to 3-21 win over Dublin in UPMC Nowlan Park on Sunday, which saw Kilkenny qualify for a Leinster Final and remain on track for their sixth provincial title in a row.

However, despite deservedly earning praise for elements of their performance and putting the game to bed in the dying minutes through a Billy Ryan goal, Lyng was asked if the cutting of big leads in certain games over the past year is a reason for concern.

"I don't know. We've won the four games and Dublin are a top class team. We're not going to have it all our own way," Lyng told the Kilkenny People Sport Podcast after the match.

"We compare all the time to the past teams and we have to stop doing that. We have a team here that's competing really well and working hard," he added.

"Are we happy that somebody else got back into the game? We're not at all but at this same time there's probably a narrative that we're going to be the same team that were there 10 or 15 years ago, that's not the case.

"It's Kilkenny of 2025."
