Kilkenny is mourning the loss of one of its most respected GAA figures, Paschal Long, who passed away on June 10.

A renowned referee and GAA stalwart, Mr Long was inducted into the GAA Hall of Fame recently in recognition of his lifelong commitment to the sport.

Paschal Long took charge of 32 finals during his illustrious career, including the 1984 All-Ireland between Cork and Offaly in Thurles.

The Carrickshock clubman enjoyed a distinguished 16-year refereeing career, and is remembered fondly by a wide circle of friends, extended family and the GAA community both locally and nationally.

Mr Long, who was predeceased by his parents Dixie and Statia and his brothers Noel and Vincent, will be sadly missed by his loving wife Olive, sons Shane, David and Stephen, brother Richard, sister Mena, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, extended family, neighbours and friends.

A native of Stoneyford, Mr Long made a lasting impact on Gaelic games in Kilkenny through decades of dedication as a referee and administrator.

His Hall of Fame award cited his outstanding contribution to the game and acknowledged his role in shaping the local sporting landscape.

Mr Long will be reposing in Johnston’s Funeral Home, John’s Green, Kilkenny City (R95 XE00) on Friday (June 13) from 5pm to 7pm with Rosary and Vigil Prayers at 6.30pm.

Removal from his home on Saturday morning at 10.45am to arrive at St Brendan’s Church, Stoneyford for Requiem Mass at 11am.

Interment afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

House is private please.
